Dear Avon Public Schools Staff, Families, and Avon High School Students,

As you know, the retirement of some of our key administrators has meant a very busy end of the school  year and start of summer for us; we began recruiting, screening, and interviewing candidates in April with a goal of ensuring a smooth start to the 2022-2023 year. Having now finalized these processes,  I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jess Giannini to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Stephanie Lockhart to the position of Principal of Avon High School, and Mr. Tasonn Haynes to the position of Student and Family Supports Coordinator.

Mr. Giannini has served as a teacher and administrator in Avon for more than twenty years, most recently as the Principal of Avon Middle School.  Prior to that, Mr. Giannini served as the Principal of Pine Grove School following his time as the Assistant Principal at PGS.  Mr. Giannini was promoted as a building administrator  in 2011 following a decade of teaching third and fourth grade at PGS.  He  began his career in education in 2000, teaching fifth grade at Maple Street School (Vernon, CT) after earning his Bachelor's of Science degree in Elementary Education from Westfield State University.  He  returned to further his education and hone his skills in curriculum development, instructional strategies, assessment design, and data analysis by earning a Masters of Arts degree in Reading and Language Arts from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU).  He earned his Sixth Year Certificate in Educational Leadership from CCSU, and most recently, Mr. Giannini completed the Superintendent and Executive District Leader Preparation program at CCSU, earning a Connecticut Superintendent of Schools Certification. Jess’s knowledge, skills, education, and experiences in both teaching and learning as well as the operational aspects of administration have prepared him well to assist any Superintendent in leading any school district: the fact that he has risen through the ranks in Avon provides him greater insight in moving our Blueprint for Excellence’s vision forward.  I am thrilled to have him as a partner in this journey.

Dr. Stephanie Lockhart will join the district on July 1st, following the completion of the current school year in Windsor Public Schools.  Dr.  Lockhart has been an Assistant Principal at Windsor High School since July 2018.  During her time in Windsor, Dr. Lockhart was responsible for the structure, support, and assessment of professional learning and teacher evaluation at WHS.  In addition, she was the primary administrator for students across multiple grade levels, overseeing both academic and social-emotional structures and processes.  Dr. Lockhart began her career in education in 2008 as a Social Studies teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts at the New Leadership Charter School before transitioning to a teaching position at Bloomfield High School (Bloomfield, CT).  During her time in Bloomfield, she was promoted to Social Studies Coordinator, which she served for two years, before being named the Interim Dean of Students at the Global Experience Magnet School in Bloomfield.  Dr. Lockhart earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT). Stephanie continued her education at Central Connecticut State University, where she earned a Masters of Science degree in Education Foundations with a focus on Multicultural Education from Central Connecticut State University; a Sixth Year Certificate in Educational Leadership in 2015; and ultimately a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership in 2019. In addition to her overall teaching and administrative experience, Dr. Lockhart has taken on various leadership roles in both of her last two school districts; she has written curriculum, developed standardized assessments and rubrics, served as a Co-Chair for the NEASC Accreditation process, served as a member of the Districtwide Data and Accountability Team, Chaired both the School Climate Committee and the District Equity Committee, designed the “Freshmen Academy,” and assisted in designing both school and District strategic plans, just to name a few. Stephanie possesses the passion for and commitment to ensuring excellence in education, high expectations for all students, and an ability to collaborate with and listen to all stakeholders. We look forward to having Dr. Lockhart continue her commitment to excellence at Avon High School.

Mr. Tasonn Haynes will join Avon Public Schools on July 1st as well following the completion of his tenure as Assistant Principal of Vernon Center Middle School, which he has been since July 2018.  During his time in Vernon Public Schools, Mr. Haynes has been an integral part of the district’s administrative team, helping his school to improve student performance on standardized assessment in English/Language Arts over the past two years via making changes to curriculum, instruction, assessments, and data-driven decision making.  Mr. Haynes has also been a member of the district’s Family Engagement Team, Climate and Safety Committee,  and Culture and Equity Team.  Mr. Haynes has worked collaboratively in Vernon to address and support students with chronic absenteeism to re-engage in school.  Prior to his time in Vernon, Mr. Haynes served as an Assistant Principal at CREC’s Academy of Science and Innovation.  After serving as an English teacher for ten years, Mr. Haynes also functioned as a school administrator on an interim basis in New Haven Public Schools.  Mr. Haynes graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in English.  Mr. Haynes also earned his Masters of Science in Education with a focus on Literacy in the Content Areas before earning his Sixth Year Certificate in Educational Leadership from Sacred Heart University. Mr. Haynes will join our committed team of faculty and administrators to continue coordinating support services for students and families, fostering positive school climate and school connectedness, building community partnerships and overseeing our ACHIEVE internship program at the high school. Now, we will hire the Assistant Coordinator for Internships as soon as possible. The past two years have made partnerships with businesses and industry difficult for our ACHIEVE program, but we are excited for the opportunity to rebuild it in post-COVID restrictions under Mr. Haynes’ leadership.

In addition, we will begin working to fill the Avon Middle School Principal position due to Mr. Giannini’s promotion.  Dr. Lockhart will be contacting Avon High School  faculty, staff, and students to introduce herself and meet as many of you as possible before school begins.

It is with great pleasure to say that after completing a rigorous search process, these three very talented individuals rose to the top of their respective candidate pools, which included applicants from throughout the nation.  Please join me in welcoming and supporting them as they transition to their new roles in the District.

I hope your summer is off to a great start. As always, be in touch if I or we can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

Bridget H. Carnemolla
