Welcome to Roaring Brook School (Posted 3/19/2013)

The Roaring Brook School community is a special place where 580 students in kindergarten through grade 4 experience the challenges and joy of learning in a nurturing environment that promotes respect for self and others.  Our highly talented staff works effectively and tirelessly in partnership with parents and the community to ensure that all children are successful learners.  We afford students a plethora of academic experiences and character-building activities to prepare them to become tomorrow’s leaders. 

In order to achieve our mission, we aligned our School Strategic Plan with the District Strategic Plan, and are implementing strategic actions to enhance school culture, to foster student achievement, and to expand communication with constituent groups.  I invite you to visit the website www.blazerstrail.weebly.com  to view a major initiative in the area of student achievement: using our Outdoor Classroom to create interdisciplinary opportunities for students to engage in collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative expression. 

 Our educational program provides the opportunity for each child to progress towards the mastery of skills and competencies.  Roaring Brook student performance continues to far exceed state averages in all areas of the school profile.  The Connecticut Mastery Testing Program administered in grades 3 and 4 reflects very strong performances in writing, reading and mathematics. 

 Our school continually engages in ongoing and systematic assessment of student performance in order to inform instruction and to determine curricular areas needing revision.  We are currently in the process of collaborating with our district colleagues to revise the English/ Language Arts and Mathematics curricula in order to align with the Common Core State Standards.

 The school community is built upon an exemplary multi-faceted collaboration between home and school.  Parents participate in the everyday life of the school in support of their children’s learning.  The Parent-Teacher Organization is highly supportive of the school through its financial and human resources.  The organization has a long standing history of providing cultural programs that enrich the curriculum, artist/author-in-residence programs, world language programs, children’s theater and others.  The Publishing Center supports the school’s focus on literacy through the publication of student books and storyboards. 

 The community is similarly supportive of the educational process.  One source of outstanding community support is the Avon Educational Foundation that provides grants to teachers and others for innovative programs.  We have been awarded several grants since AEF’s inception in 2004.  Funded grants include:  Playground Initiative:  Access, Inclusion and Laughter for All, Blazer’s Trail:  Outdoor Learning Project, Unplugged Learning, Lifecycle of a Frog using Scientific Inquiry, Use of Reader’s Theatre Audio Books to Record Reading Fluency, Hartford Stage Literary Connections Residency Program, History and Culture of China, Exploration of the Underground Railroad through Music, and Multicultural Instruments.
