Dear Parents, Staff and Concerned Citizens:
I am very pleased to communicate with you once again and keep you updated on matters involving your schools.
Believe it or not, preparation for the 2014-2015 school year has commenced in the form of Kindergarten registration and the annual AHS Parent Information Night held last week for the parents and students of the current 8th grade class. With both of these activities comes a great deal of energy and enthusiasm for what is yet to come during these milestone transition periods. As is the case each year, we pay particular attention to the interest and attendance of these activities as we begin the comprehensive, deliberate process to staff our schools for the coming year.
As has been previously announced, our district, as well as many others in the state, has opted to administer the pilot of the newly required, state-wide standardized assessment known as SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) to students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 in place of the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) this Spring. We will continue to administer the science portion of CMT in grades 5 and 8 and the science portion of CAPT to students in grade 10. The window of time during which these state-wide standardized measures will be administered will be between March 18th and June 6th. Details regarding specific testing dates will be made available to you in the very near future through your child’s school principal. Specific details regarding SBAC may be found on the Connecticut State Department of Education website at: http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2748&Q=334488.
Among the distinguishing features of SBAC as compared to the CMT and CAPT is that SBAC assessments require the students to respond using a computer rather than completing them as paper and pencil exercises. Additionally, the scores obtained during what the Connecticut State Department of Education is referring to as a “pilot year” for SBAC will only be made available to districts as class scores and will not be disaggregated on the student level. Student level summary scores will not be available until subsequent testing after the 2014-2015 administration of SBAC.
